Stopping harassment and holding abusive debt collectors accountable.

Facing financial difficulty is stressful enough without enduring relentless harassment, threats, and abusive tactics from debt collectors. Consumers are protected by strict laws that govern how and when collection agencies can contact them.

Have Questions?

FAQ about Debt Collection Practices

  • Can a debt collector call my workplace?
If you tell a debt collector that your employer does not allow you to receive such calls at work, they must stop calling you there by law.
  • Can I go to jail for unpaid debt?
No. You cannot be arrested or sent to jail for failing to pay a credit card, medical bill, or personal loan. Threats of arrest are illegal.
  • What if the debt is past the statute of limitations?
If a debt is "time-barred," a collector cannot successfully sue you for it. If they try, we can have the lawsuit dismissed.
  • What is the limitation period for filing a complaint before the Consumer Commission?
Under Section 69 of the Consumer Protection Act 2019, a consumer complaint must be filed within 2 years from the date on which the cause of action arose.
  • Can I claim compensation for mental harassment and legal expenses in a consumer dispute?
Yes. Consumer Commissions routinely award compensation for mental agony, emotional distress, and legal costs alongside refund or product replacement orders.
